THE PROBLEM

Many kids between the ages of 5-10 struggle to become more independent from their parents and develop positive, healthy habits that will benefit them in the long term.

SOLUTION OUTLINE

Create an app that helps kids establish a structured routine that makes it easier to incorporate new habits into their daily lives.

RESEARCH

USER RESEARCH

1. The target audience of kids was between 5-10 years old. There were elementary school students. I conducted user interviews with kids and their parents. Most interview participants reported sad feelings. They didn’t know how to improve habits in real life. The feedback received through research made it very clear that users would be open and willing to improve their habits if they had rewards and habits with the star system.

2. The "cue, craving, response, and reward" framework is a central concept in "Atomic Habits" by James Clear. These four components help explain how habits are formed and can be used effectively in the kids' habit tracker app

AFFINITY DIAGRAM

After conducting user interviews, I created an affinity diagram to organize the information. Following this, I identified the most crucial aspects of the app's development, which were highlighted in green and prioritized for implementation.

DESIGN IMPROVEMENTS

  1. SETTINGS FOR A SINGLE HABIT

My users were having trouble understanding the meaning of the frequency and duration settings for a single habit. I decided to simplify the basic habit cards to have just one parameter.

2. THE PROGRESS BAR AND CALENDAR

  • I showed clear understanding through color. In addition, I added information about rewards to show the total cost.

  • I hid the calendar since users don't need it constantly open. This way, I streamlined the visual layout and created more space for scrolling through habit cards.

  • To facilitate better organization and easier access to habits, I've implemented sorting capabilities. Users can now arrange their categories in a manner that makes sense to them.

  • I've updated the icons associated with categories to ensure they are visually distinct from habit icons. By refining the design of these icons, users can easily differentiate between categories and habits at a glance, reducing potential confusion and enhancing usability.

3. CATEGORIES OF HABITS

  • I've introduced additional categories to provide users with more options to classify their habits effectively.

  • Users now have the flexibility to create their categories based on their unique habits and routines. This feature empowers users to personalize their experience, aligning the app more closely with their specific needs and goals.

STYLE GUIDE

FONTS

I chose Poppins and Roboto fonts for the habit tracker app because they are highly legible, have a clean and modern look, and are optimized for digital screens. Poppins were selected for headings and Roboto for body text, creating a visual hierarchy that helps users quickly identify information.

COLOR SCHEME

I chose a monochromatic color scheme. The primary color is deep purple. I chose it because my app is designed for both boys and girls. This color is neutral for my audience.

In addition, my color scheme is accessible and suitable for people with low vision.

TAKEWAYS

IMPACT

This app has proven to be popular among children due to its user-friendly interface and engaging features. One of the reasons why children enjoy using this app is that they can view a list of habits and customize them according to their preferences. This feature empowers children to take ownership of their habits and make choices that align with their goals.

Additionally, children are motivated by the rewards system and progress bar. By tracking their progress, they can see tangible evidence of their efforts, which encourages them to continue engaging with the app. The rewards system also provides a sense of achievement and recognition, which helps to build confidence and self-esteem.

The app's design has been carefully crafted to appeal to children's sensibilities, with bright colors that create a fun and immersive experience. The app's user interface is intuitive and easy to navigate, which allows children to use it independently without requiring assistance.

WHAT I LEARNED

I have come to understand that effective communication with users is a fundamental aspect of creating successful products and experiences. It is through close and ongoing interaction with users that we can gain valuable insights and feedback that inform our design decisions.

NEXT STEPS

  • Add a chat between parents and kids.

  • Add a report on the growth and dynamics of your habit.

  • Educational content.
